Volunteer Job Descriptions

All volunteers must be at least 18 years old.

Check Out: Assist in our client-choice shopping area by providing a welcoming environment for clients, assist with restocking shelves, putting together Emergency Bags, and bagging up clients’ groceries. Some clients prefer assistance carrying groceries to their car. Must be able to lift up to 30 lbs. and be able to be on feet for up to 2 hours.

Store Stocker/Emergency Bag Maker (Floater): Keep store shelves stocked and tidy by restocking the shelves with product and keeping the shelves organized. And help make emergency bags for shoppers who do not have appointments. Must be able to lift up to 30lbs, be on feet for up to 2 hours and be able to walk up and down stairs.

Food Recovery/Grocery Store Run: This is an active and short shift that helps us collect food from local grocery stores. Drive Joyce's cargo van to various grocery stores like Lunds & Byerlys, Whole Foods and Cub Foods. Must have a valid driver's license and be able to lift 40lb boxes.

Emergency Bag Packing: This volunteer will help pack bags with shelf-stable items. This is a fun and laid-back task, and volunteers are welcome to listen to music, podcasts, etc. while working. Must be able to lift up to 30lbs, be on feet for up to 2 hours and be able to walk up and down stairs.

Food Unloading: Help unload vehicles that have boxes and/or bags of food and get items into the food shelf. Also help get food stocked in the store. Must be able to lift up to 30lbs, be on feet for up to 2 hours and be able to walk up and down stairs.

Recycler: Using Joyce Uptown Food Shelf's van, drive the van of carboard to the recycling center in Brooklyn Park. Must have a valid driver's license.

Cleaning: Clean the main floor of the food shelf. Cleaning duties include, but are not limited to sweeping, mopping, vacuuming, cleaning bathrooms, and wiping down fridges and freezers. Must be able to bend, squat, kneel, push, pull, reach, be on feet for up to 2 hours and be able to walk up and down stairs.

Pet Food Bagger: Get cat and dog food out of bulk size bags and into small Ziploc bags for participants to take home to their pets. Must be able to lift up to 30 lbs., be able to walk up and down stairs, and be on feet for up to 2 hours. 

We can also use help with clerical work, design, video and media, etc. If you are interested in using your skills to help, please reach out!

For every $1.00 donated we can purchase $2.20 of food from our foodbanks.
