Joyce Uptown Food Shelf is a community outreach of Lake Harriet United Methodist Church and is supported by other churches, organizations and individuals.

The mission of Joyce Uptown Food Shelf is to provide emergency food to hungry people in Southwest Minneapolis. The food shelf gives clients a three-day supply of nutritionally balanced food once a month. It will also make referrals to other agencies for additional services.

The staff consists of a paid part-time director and three paid part-time workers. They are assisted by many dedicated volunteers from the community, including Minneapolis Uptown Rotary members. In addition to helping raise funds, Rotary also provides staffing every Thursday evening.

Food comes from four major sources:



  • DONATIONS of food from individuals, churches, organizations and food drives.
  • THE FOOD GROUP (formerly EFN - Emergency Foodshelf Network) is a coalition of 26 Hennepin County food shelves which purchases from food suppliers at a discounted rate.
  • SECOND HARVEST HEARTLAND FOOD BANK which receives food from major corporations and delivers to Joyce Uptown Food Shelf for a minimal maintenance fee.
  • COMMODITIES from a U.S. government surplus commodities program.

Joyce Uptown Food Shelf uses donated money to purchase food at a discount  (less than $.20 per pound). Food occasionally is purchased at retail when required for nutritional balance.
